Mammoth Part 5: Mountain Bikes and Zip Lines

Rich and the kids have been looking forward to mountain biking for a year since our last trip.  The older kids were super excited this year because they were finally going to mountain bike from the tippy-top of the mountain.  Anna and Ryan started mountain biking when they were about 6 and 5 (respectively).  We started them off on the downtown run (from the base of the mountain, down to town) and they did that for several years.  Last year Rich took them up the gondola to the middle of the mountain and they finally graduated to the top this year!  They all did a great job!  Anna and Rich spent the summer on their bikes and made the trek with relative ease.  Ryan also did fantastic—he did not love the climbing parts though!  At the very end of the trail, Rich waved to a passerby and hit soft dirt at the same time...so he had a bit of a fall.  Thankfully, my ever-so-cautious husband was wearing plenty of protective gear so he didn't get too hurt.  Oh-the best part?  One of the mountain employees  gave Rich 3 friends and family passes, so they got to bike for free!  A HUGE blessing!  It was the last day of the mountain biking season and we were happy to be on the receiving end of that!

While they were mountain biking, Sara and I hung out at 11,000 feet and had a snack.  After a while, we took the gondola back down to the base of the mountain and Sara begged me to go zip-lining.  So we did...twice!  The zip-line dudes heard Sara's plea to go again and couldn't resist, so they let her go one more time!  The one dude told her she had to "hang on this time" but after a little chat about her not physically being able to hang on, he understood and let her go anyway!  She chose "medium" the second time instead of "slow" and really zoomed down!  Of course she wanted to go again on "fast"...maybe next year, Lord willing!  Most of these photos were taken with my phone...Ryan needed my camera SD card for his GoPro while he zoomed down the mountain.

Rich and Ryan biked from the campsite to The Village—only 2 miles, but ALL uphill.  Ryan says he'll take the shuttle with us next time!  When we got to the Village, we took a shuttle to the base of the mountain, then took the gondola to the top of the mountain.

Trying to catch his breath

Off they go!

Can you see them?

Having a snack.  Food just taste good at 11,000 feet!

Looking out (the town is on the right side of the picture, about 1/2 way up)

Climbing the ladder all by herself (a bit protected with the repel, of course!).  She didn't even hesitate for a second!
