Faith like a child
About 2 or 3 weeks ago, we were shopping and Ryan mentioned he wanted to have a "craft sale on September 8" (a random date) in front of our house-not make crafts and sale them-no, he wanted to sale craft supplies. Of course, I mention that would be OK, thinking he was going to move on and forget about it. As the date grew nearer, he would say, "only (#) more days until my craft sale!" and he instructed Anna on what he was planning on, how he was setting it up and what he would sale. Well...September 8 finally came and Ryan woke up excited to have his craft sale after school. I made up my mind to let him totally do things the way he planned in his head and worry about soothing his disappointment that no one would come later. Out went the little table and chairs along with about 15 used crayons, 10 random markers, a small stack of paper, 2 pairs of dull scissors, tape that was almost gone, a very tiny notebook, or "ticketbook" as we call it in our family, a piggy-bank that sat right in the middle of the table, and a sign that read "CRAFT SALE" written by Ryan and taped to the mailbox. I thought, OK, we'll sit here for 10 minutes, then it will get hot and they'll get distracted and be done. Yes, it was hot, and we sat there. After a few minutes our neighbor happened to come out and came over. Then another neighbor drove by (coming home) and became curious, so he also came over. Then another neighbor's child was curious and came over with her dad. Then the spouse of a neighbor already there came over also. They all happened to have change in there pockets that they gave Ryan in return for questionable craft supplies. Ryan wasn't surprised-after all, that's what he had imagined for the past 2 or 3 weeks. He collected money and sold his supplies as if he was a professional. I, on the other hand, am convinced it was nothing less than an act of God...Oh, to have faith like a child... Father, thank you for the lesson you taught me today- You love us tenderly and you care about the small stuff. May I never forget the way my son had faith today. Teach me to have faith like a child.
